I designed and painted this sign for Coffee on Gladstone in South Brisbane. The building is very old and it features a classic squared-off storefont roof facade so I wanted to create something that complemented this traditional look.
I found inspiration in a nostalgic documentary about Brisbane in the 1960’s that showed signs painted at a South Brisbane school. After measuring the space I drafted some variations of lettering to find good proportions. I was able to colourmatch the existing navy shade of the building then add a subtle shadow.
Painted signs are a great option when there is a difficult surface to consider that will not accept vinyl. This corrugated facade receives full sun and UV all year round so I used a high quality exterior acrylic paint which will last 10 years minimum. Unlike vinyl, painted signs develop a pleasing patina with age, create minimal waste and can be easily painted over if needed.
